Associate Choreographer

Transforming ideas into movement.

As Joburg Ballet enters its next chapter, the company is committed not only to presenting exceptional ballet, but to creating a living artistic ecosystem in which experience, knowledge and creativity can be shared across generations.

The Joburg Ballet Associate Artists Programme brings distinguished artists into a closer and more formal relationship with the company, recognising individuals whose contribution extends beyond the stage. Associate Artists are invited to share their experience, artistic perspective and expertise through coaching, teaching, staging, creative collaboration, mentorship, community engagement and the development of new work.

The programme reflects Joburg Ballet’s belief that a company’s greatest asset is not only its repertoire, but the people who carry its knowledge, history and artistic values forward.

The inaugural Associate Artists are Angela Malan and Kitty Phetla — two exceptional South African artists who represent different but deeply connected generations of Joburg Ballet’s artistic journey.

A Living Artistic Legacy

Together, Angela Malan and Kitty Phetla embody two important strands of Joburg Ballet's identity: legacy and transformation.

Angela represents the company's founding generation and the preservation of the classical ballet lineage that established Joburg Ballet's foundations. Kitty represents a new generation of South African artistic leadership — one that embraces classical excellence while expanding ballet's cultural relevance and giving space to new voices and perspectives.

Their appointments establish the Associate Artists Programme as an important part of Joburg Ballet's artistic strategy: creating opportunities for experienced artists to remain actively engaged with the company while investing their knowledge, creativity and experience in the next generation.

The programme will continue to grow, creating a wider circle of artistic collaborators who can contribute to Joburg Ballet's repertoire, training, mentorship, education, outreach and creative ambitions.

Looking Forward

The Associate Artists and Associate Choreographer initiatives form part of Joburg Ballet's broader vision for a company that is proudly classical at its core, contemporary in its outlook, African in its context and global in its aspiration.

They create a continuum between the company's past, present and future — honouring those who built its foundations, supporting the artists shaping its present identity, and creating pathways for the choreographers, dancers, teachers and creative voices who will define its future.
