Alongside presenting world-class ballet to its audiences, Joburg Ballet is equally committed to reaching those who may never otherwise have the opportunity to experience ballet or live performance. A first encounter with the arts can open up an entirely new world — sparking imagination, building confidence, broadening horizons and, for some, revealing possibilities they may never have considered. Joburg Ballet believes these experiences can leave a lasting impression and, in some cases, change the course of a person’s life.

Each year, more than 6,000 children, young people and senior citizens engage with the company through interactive workshops, school visits, rehearsals and performance experiences. Through this work, Joburg Ballet helps broaden access to ballet, encourage greater participation in the arts and contribute to the growth of the cultural sector in Johannesburg and beyond.

Batsha-Ba Programme

The Batsha-Ba Programme expands access to ballet in underserved communities, introducing young people to the arts while opening their eyes to the many creative and professional opportunities that exist within the sector.

Through a partnership with the City of Johannesburg, participants are invited into Joburg Ballet’s studios and performance spaces, where they engage not only with dancers, but with the many creative and technical professionals who bring a production to life. These experiences broaden perceptions of the arts, encourage new audiences and introduce young people to potential pathways in dance, theatre and the wider creative economy.

The programme also supports arts and culture learning within the City of Johannesburg and provides positive, structured engagement for young people in communities where access to creative opportunities can be limited.
