Joburg Ballet returns to perform at the Joburg Theatre after 13 months

One year and one month after Joburg Ballet’s season was cut short by the start of the national lockdown, the company returns to the stage of the Joburg Theatre from 9 to 11 April with Ballet and Beyond, a showcase of three world premieres and one SA premiere.

The programme of four ballets includes the first SA performances of highlights from Laurencia, a 1939 Soviet-era Russian classic, two new ballets, The Silent Wanderer and I Am Woman, commissioned from aspiring Joburg Ballet choreographers Mario Gaglione and Craig Pedro, and a world premiere, Grey, by Corey Baker, international award-winning choreographer celebrated for his innovation and commitment to driving dance into the 21st century.

Augmenting the programme will be SA pianist and composer Rocco de Villiers. This will include excerpts from his newly-composed dance score, One Foot in Front of the Other, offering a glimpse into music that will be used in its entirety in a later Joburg Ballet season. Mr. de Villiers will appear at all performances of Ballet and Beyond with the exception of the opening performance where he will be replaced by a pianist still to be announced.

Joburg Ballet CEO, Esther Nasser, said that although Joburg Ballet has made limited appearances in the past year at non-traditional venues such as the Festival of Lights at the Johannesburg Zoo and at shopping malls, returning to the main stage of the Joburg Theatre marks an important step forward for the ballet company in a world severely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

“Coming back to perform at the Joburg Theatre,” she said, “marks a home-coming for us after more than a year. It has been a year of uncertainty and we are by no means out of the woods yet but the six-performance season in April will be one of Joburg Ballet’s most important as the company celebrates both a new beginning as well as the 20th anniversary year of its establishment in 2001.”

Endorsing Esther Nasser’s comments, artistic director Iain MacDonald added that with their return to the stage, the dancers will be reclaiming their identities as professional dancers and will be connecting once more with their audiences.

“That link between dancers and audiences is a lifeline for performing artists. I believe the four works on show this season will offer something for everyone, giving the dancers the opportunity to express themselves in both new and familiar ways. We are also honoured to have pianist and composer Rocco de Villiers with us for Ballet and Beyond.”

COVID-19

Joburg Ballet in partnership with the Joburg Theatre will observe the prevailing COVID-19 regulations. A list of protocols in place for performances is available on request from edgar@joburgballet.com.

The audience for each performance is restricted to 100 instead of the usual 960. Tickets will be sold as unreserved seating and patrons will be seated on arrival at the theatre by the ushers in accordance with social distancing protocols.
