Senior Soloists Biographies
Monike Cristina was born in São Paulo, Brazil and started ballet at age six. She was awarded a scholarship to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater at the Youth America Grand Prix in New York and also won the jury award. In the same year she was invited to participate in the Tanzolymp in Berlin.
In 2009 she began her association with Cedan (Cia Estável de Dança) and in 2012 was awarded the silver medal at the XX International Dance Seminar of Brasilia. In 2012 participated in Cuballet under the direction of Laura Alonso, dancing the role of Odette-Odile in Swan Lake. She was part of the Cia Jovem Do Teatro Bolshoi Brazil, performing in Paraguay and Switzerland. She was invited to be part of the tour of Black Swan and Virtuosos in twenty-three cities in Russia.
She joined Joburg Ballet In 2016 where she now holds the rank of Senior Soloist. With the company she has danced leading roles in Snow White, Carmen, Raymonda, The Sleeping Beauty, Giselle and Don Quixote.
In 2020 she was invited by American dancer Misty Copeland to be one of 32 ballerinas from around the world to participate in Swans for Relief, an online initiative to raise funds for dance companies impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Clips of the 32 dancers performing The Dying Swan were edited into a single performance of this fabled ballerina showpiece.
Shana Dewey was born in Johannesburg and started ballet at the age of four, training in Johannesburg with Vanessa Eborall and Dorothy de Witt and at the South African Ballet Theatre Junior Academy. She completed the Royal Academy of Dance examinations with distinction. She was the recipient of the Val Whyte Bursary in 2007 after which she joined the Joburg Ballet Academy.
In 2011 she continued her ballet studies in Havana, Cuba, and at the English National Ballet School in London. During her studies in the UK, she danced with the ENB’s junior company, appearing in several roles in The Sleeping Beauty and Don Quixote.
Since joining Joburg Ballet she has appeared in all the company’s mainstream productions as well as other events.
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Ruan Galdino began ballet studies in 2005 at Setor de Atividades Fisicas e Culturais do Colegio Pedro II SAAC. His teachers included Ana Palmieri, Romulo Ramos, Victor Ciattei, Paulo Melgaço, Vadim Germanovich, Piotr Rusanov, Maria Wakhrusheva and Veronika Pyzhikova.
He studied for four years at the Escola Estadual de Dança Maria Olenewa Foundation of the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro following which he was awarded a two-year scholarship to the American Academy of Ballet, New York, and was a soloist with BALLETARRJ Young Company in 2014 and 2015.
He won awards in national competitions in Brazil and was a participant in the New York finals of the Youth America Grand Prix in 2015, a participant in the World Ballet Competition in Orlando, Florida, in 2014 and a semi-finalist in the Professional Category in 2015. He was invited by director Ruslan Nurtdinov to perform in Russia in Black Swan with R&A International Productions in 2015.
In September 2015, he joined Joburg Ballet where he now holds the rank of Senior Soloist. His repertoire before joining Joburg Ballet included Coppélia, The Rite of Spring, Le Corsaire, The Pharaoh’s Daughter, Diana and Actaeon Pas de Deux, Flames of Paris Pas de Deux and Le Corsaire Pas d’Esclave. At Joburg Ballet his repertoire includes leading roles in Carmen, The Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, Cinderella, Snow White, Giselle, Big City, Big Dreams, Raymonda, The Nutcracker and many shorter ballets and divertissements.
Revil Yon was born in Uitenhage, South Africa, and started dancing at age 14 in Port Elizabeth. In 2012, when he was 18, he joined Cape Town City Ballet as a Graduate and a year later became a member of the company. In 2016, he was promoted to Senior Artist and subsequently to Soloist. In 2011 he was a finalist in the Cecchetti Cyril Beaumont Bursary and in 2015 received the Keith Mackintosh Prague Scholarship, attending the Prague Master Classes the following year.
While with Cape Town City Ballet he danced roles in Giselle, Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Coppélia, Romeo and Juliet and ballets by John Neumeier as well as working with choreographers Ashley Killar, Kirsten Isenberg, Yarisha Singh and Kirvan Fortuin. He has danced for youth companies in Port Elizabeth and East London as well as in community development initiatives.
In March 2017 he danced as a guest artist in Joburg Ballet’s production of La Traviata and in July 2017 joined Joburg Ballet as a Soloist. He now holds the rank of Senior Soloist. With Joburg Ballet his repertoire has included leading roles in Giselle, Cinderella, Carmen, The Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and The Nutcracker as well as in several one-act ballets. With Joburg Ballet he has danced in galas in Beijing and Cape Town.
